Initially it was announced that Katrina Kaif will be pairing with Rajni. Later on it was announced that Bollywood actress Deepika Padukone will be donning the female lead role.

When asked Katrina Kaif that why she did not pair with Rajni, she said, "I am acting with Salman Khan in a film titled Ek Thaa Tiger and with Shahrukh Khan in an untitled film.

Rajni’s daughter Soundarya approached me to do the heroine role in Kochadaiyaan. I thought I can adjust the call sheet because Shahrukh’s film shooting was to take place In London.

Soundarya had also told me that 20 days was enough for her but I was not able to allocate the days because I had already committed those days for Shahrukh’s film. I am very disappointed because I was not able to act with Rajni."
